Ryan Pinney, CSFP – TheProAdvisor
I started my “official” career as a financial advisor in Roseville, CA with my families insurance agency in 2004, but I contend that I really joined the industry as an eight year old that finally started to understand what my parents frequent conversation we about. It’s pretty hard not to pick-up general terminology, concepts, and planning rules when you grow up in a family where both of my parents worked in the industry – more accurately eat, slept, and breathed insurance.
Where It All Began
I was born and raised in Sacramento, CA and surrounding area until the age of 17 when I grew bored of High School and “tested out” after my junior year. I promptly joined the United States Marine Corps and went to Boot Camp at MCRD San Diego in January of 1993.
After leaving active duty in January of 1997, I moved to Provo, UT to hang out with friends and get into mischief, being honest, it was mostly to cause a little mischief. Fortunately for me, I meet a nice young lady named Sandi who challenged me to be a better version of myself. I really liked her, so I took up her challenge and I’m really glad I did because in July of 1998 she became my wife.
Back to School
I never really liked school, I always found it kind of boring and mundane – frankly, that was the reason that I decided to “test out” after my junior year of high school. Even so, thanks to the military, my wife, and general circumstance along the way, I had managed to accumulated college classes, CLEP Tests, and life experiences.
With a growing family and a desire to excel professionally, I realized that I needed to finish a college degree. Fortunately for me, the military gave me the discipline and drive to stick with it even when I didn’t want to. In 2001, I graduate from the University of Phoenix with a B.S. in Business Management while simultaneously holding a 40 hour a week job and raising our first of four children.
New Chapter Begins
In February of 2004, my wife and I along with our then three children decided we had had enough of the cold Utah winters and wanted to return to California. At the prodding of my father and with the encouragement of my wife, I joined the family insurance brokerage agency where I started to help other advisors with their problem planning case and difficult underwriting problems. I loved it and wanted to learn everything about the insurance industry, financial planning, and investments that I could. I haven’t looked back since.
A Rising Star
Thanks to good genes, a support wife and kids, and voracious appetite for knowledge, I found early success. That early success lead to bigger and more complicated planning cases, underwriting challenges, and the need to create solutions that didn’t readily exist.
My primary focus had always been on financial literacy and education, wealth creation and asset preservation. Eventually, I was recognized as an expert in my field and became a regular contributor to financial publications including being featured by Bankrate.com, Yahoo! Finance, and Fox Business News.
Birth of TheProAdvisor
TheProAdvisor moniker and website, stemmed from my frustration with the poor planning knowledge of some so-called “financial advisors” and my desire to help educate both advisors and consumers alike.
I was already consulting with other true, top “Financial Professionals” from many of nations largest and most respected firms, including Southwest Securities, Wells Fargo, RBC, New York Life, Northwestern Mutual, Linsco Private Ledger (LPL) and others, providing one-on-one support and advice to them and their clients, so I figured it wouldn’t be difficult to take real life situation and turn them into teaching opportunities shared via a blog.
The task has proven bigger than expected, but I still love to provide input and educational advice whenever time permits. I truly believe that a financial literacy starts with me and is something everyone deserves to benefit from. Fortunately, I have found time to promote ethical planning practices and share my insights through professional organizations like the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) and National Association of Insurance & Financial Advisors (NAIFA).
Ryan is a 4-time MDRT “Top of the Table” qualifier. He has served as the President of the NAIFA – Northern California chapter. He is currently serving on MDRT Member Communications Committee as the Area Chair, Western Region USA and as the Committee Chairman for NAIFA California’s Social Media Task Force.
I reside in Roseville, CA with my beautiful wife Sandi, our three rowdy boys – RJ (12), Braden (10), Connor (4), and our feisty daughter Sienna (9) – not to mention a few sisters, a brother, and my parents. Best of all we couldn’t be happier!
